This community has evolved through a dialogical approach to teaching and learning, where academic and technical staff act as facilitators in an ongoing process of shared inquiry with students. The project sets design briefs to create everyday objects that bring joy in use, proposing artefacts that recognise and celebrate the innumerable skilled actions that shape daily life. Atelier m4 is an award winning, 4th generation furniture brand based in Matsumoto City in Japan. Originating from the 120–year old Maeda Mokugei Studio, atelier m4’s designs are rooted in the style of the Edo samurai and townspeople, characterised by delicate and minimal structures and skilfully joined materials. Perpetually looking to a more sustainable future, atelier m4 have collaborated with researchers and craftsmen to develop new methods to utilise fast–growing coniferous trees and transform discarded wood into elegant, luxurious furniture. Relying solely on hand tools and traditional techniques, atelier m4 creates furniture made with local woods, embodying a deep respect for nature and place and a universal richness in each piece.

Edin and Lina Kjellvertz launched Dusty Deco as a platform for curating vintage furniture, interior accessories and art. Nychair X is a folding lounge chair designed in 1970 by Takeshi Nii, continuously made in Japan. The simple yet elegant design, combined with comfort, versatility, and repairability, made Nychair X a chair loved by generations. Thanks to its light weight and foldability, it can be easily moved between rooms and does not take much space when folded, making it a great companion for contemporary multifunctional living spaces. By collaborating with fabric designers or brands like Carhartt WIP, Nychair X reaches out to new audiences while cherishing its original principles. This year Grythyttan Stålmöbler celebrates 130 years of Swedish craftsmanship and Scandinavian design. The furniture is still made by hand from wood and steel in Grythyttan, making the chairs and tables extremely weather-resistant and ensure they last decade after decade. The characteristic rocking mechanism of the chairs is created by the special spring steel frame, also requires human craftsmanship.
