THE UPCYCL

THE UPCYCL is a B2B platform that enables what is waste for one company to become valuable resources for another. By connecting industries with industrial waste materials and companies that need them, THE UPCYCL creates circular possibilities. It fosters a tight-knit community where everyone shares surplus materials, maximizing the value of existing resources. In doing so, THE UPCYCL community reduces waste and virgin material consumption. All THE UPCYCL materials, referred to as New Waste materials, are uniform and flow continuously, ensuring that, when matched, the stream of New Waste materials keeps flowing. This enables companies to rely on a circular supply chain or turn industrial waste into a source of circular revenue.

Annually, over 1.1 million tons of waste are generated from industrial and manufacturing companies in Denmark. The portion of the waste consisting of uniform and reliable materials is referred to as New Waste. Today, many tons of New Waste materials end up in landfills every year without ever being used again. THE UPCYCL opens the doors for companies and circular thinkers, interested in learning about their Circular business model, and how, by working together, we can circulate industrial waste materials into new solutions. In THE UPCYCL's showroom you can explore different New Waste materials from the Danish industry and be inspired. How can these materials be used by designers, creators, architects, and developers in the future?

The exhibition, TRANSCENDENCE, takes place in an industrial hall formerly used to produce ship engines at District Refshaleøen in Copenhagen with sharpened focus on materials and sustainability. Architect and curator, Frederikke Aagard will install a dreamy vision in this rather raw space made from natural and recycled materials, which will be reused after the exhibition. Through insightful installation and hands-on demonstrations, this exhibition invites visitors to delve deeper into our perception and understanding of materials and gain a newfound appreciation for their significance in the objects we create and consume. TRANSCENDENCE will bring together big and small, commercial and research, designers and craftsmen - all idealists, who want to make an impact in manufacturing, sourcing, distribution, and longevity of design.

Since its inception in 2013, Signe Byrdal Terenziani has facilitated the growth of the design community in her role as Managing Director. It all began as a small design event held in an old warehouse in Nordhavn, a harbour area overlooking Copenhagen’s waterfront. Four Danish brands launched the event as a joint initiative: Montana, Erik Jørgensen (now owned by Fredericia Furniture), Anker & Co, and Kvadrat. At that time, Copenhagen lacked a proper design festival, since the previous annual furniture fair at Bella Center closed down some years before.

Today, the 3daysofdesign festival extends to the entire city of Copenhagen and is considered the most significant annual design festival in Scandinavia.

Each year since its inception, 3daysofdesign has grown in popularity exponentially. In 2023, over 250 brands exhibited at the festival, where visitors could choose from as many as 500 events to attend in various design districts across Copenhagen, such as design talks, networking events, etc.

3daysofdesign takes place every year in Copenhagen mainly during the second week of June from Wednesday to Friday. In 2024 the festival will be held from 12 - 14 June.
