Founded in 1917 as a handicraft college (husflidskole), OsloMet Product Design is rooted in a strong tradition of making and material knowledge. Today, this legacy continues through workshop–based experimentation and close collaboration with industry and real production contexts. Product design is approached as a materially grounded practice engaged with societal and environmental questions, where making, process, and critical reflection are inseparable.
Built by Design is a curated exhibition of bachelor student projects that moves beyond yet another chair to explore how designers can shape the elements architecture is made of. Developed through the course Critical Reflection in Design Practice in dialogue with Gudbrandsdalens Uldvarefabrik, Lundhs Real Stone, Hydro Extrusion, Hamran, Henriksen Snekkeri, Sirkull, Kraftull, and Høine, the exhibition brings together fragments, systems, and interventions in wood, wool, aluminium, brick, and larvikite. Presented as a spatial collage, the projects explore how material, construction, and circularity can shape the built environment, while reflecting on the role of the designer within it.
