Designing Moments that Shape Us
German designer Sebastian Herkner reflects on the importance of slowing down, drawing inspiration from the past while designing for the future, and appreciating the moments that shape us.
This year's theme at 3daysofdesign is Make This Moment Matter. What does the present mean to you?
I think the present is always a reflection of your achievements, as well as the dreams you have ahead of you. So it becomes a kind of personal, very intimate dialogue. It's important to be graceful but also to shape your own attitude. Now more than ever, we need to take a stand and believe in our values and ideals.
In Milan there was quite a lot of focus on the past. How do you use design history in your work?
Yes, this was quite boring and less inspiring. I do not understand why some presentations looked like the best of the 1960's or 1990's. It's absolutely fine to take inspiration from the past, but then I expect a translation into a new and contemporary design.
You have visited 3daysofdesign on several occasions. What are you looking forward to this time?
What I appreciate about 3daysofdesign is the pure focus on our discipline: design. It is just about furniture, accessories and lighting.
Which new item are you most proud of from the last year?
That's a damn hard question, but let's talk about the Terre radiator I designed for Tubes. It's inspired by traditional tiled stoves with their glazed ceramic casings. Beyond the aesthetic aspect, ceramics retains heat for longer. This fact served as the fundamental premise for the design. To achieve this, we had terracotta extruded in Tuscany to encase the heating element.
Do we need new items?
As long as we are curious and interested beings, there is a need.
What makes a house a home?
A home is created by the people, objects, and moments that mean a great deal to you.
This year, the festival has invited people to join dinners around long tables. What is the perfect dinner for you?
Interesting conversations are fundamental – they can be profound, yet also lighthearted.
What good is an excellent dinner if you merely sit there, bored, fidgeting in your seat? And which people, dead or alive, would you prefer to sit around the table?

Pizza with my family. My three-year old daughter loves pizza.
