This exhibition establishes a platform which convenes a selected group of international designers and makers working beyond mass production. Designers explore form, technique, and detail through processes informed by material properties and production methods. The exhibited objects are the result of in-depth material research, technical expertise, and time–intensive development.

Founded in 1874, the Danish lighting manufacturer Louis Poulsen creates products that encompass the duality of design and light. Every detail in the design has a purpose. Lapuan Kankurit is a linen and wool weaving mill based in Lapua, Finland. Their roots go all the way back to 1917, and today the company is led by the fourth generation. Together with top designers and professionals in the weaving industry, they weave sauna and spa textiles as well as wool blankets and other interior textiles from natural raw materials. They carry the responsibility of passing on the craftsmanship of weaving to the future generations. Lapuan Kankurit weaves responsibly, respecting the environment while continuously developing new innovations and techniques. They weave Nordic design, inspired by pure nature. To balance out the chilling climate of the north, they weave heaps of warmth and softness into their textiles.

Japan Creative is a non–profit organisation composed of members who are involved in the field of design and engaged in material research. When one traces the process by which everything is created, one finds that its origin lies in the materials. As those who are involved in design in Japan, blessed with rich diversity of materials, Japan Creative focuses on the inherent backgrounds, characteristics and potential of materials themselves, reevaluating their value through a designer’s perspective. Japan Creative believes that only by understanding how materials are shaped by the unique natural environments and climates, and how they are situated, can it move beyond superficial expression and create designs with necessity and sustainability.

The concept behind Woodnotes, established in 1987, is to combine artistic creativity inspired by Finland’s rugged nature with technology to shape beautiful local raw materials. The softness of wool, the purity of paper and the glow of linen define a collection of timeless products with rare aesthetic quality. Woodnotes’ unique paper yarn innovation results in durable, allergy–friendly designer rugs and blinds made from paper yarn and cotton. These are presented alongside outdoor rugs, tufted wool–linen carpets, and atelier–woven rugs in cotton–paper and wool–paper yarns, among others.

Swiss based USM Modular Furniture has been providing timeless and high–quality modular furniture designs suitable for both home and office environments for 60 years. Recognised as a design classic, USM Modular Furniture was formally accepted into the permanent Design Collection of the Museum of Modern Art in New York (MoMA), confirming the artistic character of the product. Created from a few basic elements, the company’s furniture offers tailor–made solutions that can be expanded or reconfigured as needed. Each furniture piece allows room for maximum versatility and creativity. To encourage long–term use, all of the USM product lines are made from high–quality materials for strength and durability to last for generations.
